Shootout agony for Carlisle

Carlisle's Johnstone's Paint Trophy season is over after they were eliminated by Preston after a penalty shootout.

Visiting Preston took an early lead through Chris Beardsley (3), which was taken through to the half time break. Carlisle equalised, and forced a 1-1 draw to send the game into a penalty shootout, when Jon-Paul McGovern (68) scored midway through the second half.

The home side ended with 10-men when Liam Noble was shown a straight red card late on.

After Carlisle had missed three successive spot kicks David Buchanan converted what proved to be the winning goal for Preston to hand them a 3-1 win.
