Carlisle See Off Southampton's U21 Side

Carlisle's pre-season friendlies got underway with a 5-1 win over Southampton's U21 development squad in a behind-closed-doors friendly on Friday afternoon.

Graham Kavanagh gave his new signings an outing as well as a chance to impress for the players he has on trial with Mark Gillespie making his return from last seasons long-term injury setback in goal.

Summer signing Billy Paynter scored first with a second added, I'm assuming from a trialist as the official website mentioned no name, before Josh Gillies added a third.

David Amoo added the fourth before also getting a second with the fifth from the penalty spot after he had been brought down himself. Chris Regis had the last word for the Saints but the Cumbrians still ran out five-one winners.

On the game, speaking to the official website after, Kavanagh said: 'I'm really pleased with what I saw today. It was a good workout and a good performance.

'It's always pleasing to score five goals but we were disappointed that we conceded. I said to the lads at the end of the game that we need to create a clean sheet mentality this season but there were a lot of good points.'

A nice way to start off pre-season isn't it!
