Carlisle Bring In Brentford Keeper On Loan

The huge loss of goalkeeper Mark Gillespie, leaving Carlisle for Walsall recently having turned down a new deal, has been softened by the loan arrival of Brentford's former Watford keeper Jack Bonham.

Bonham, fresh from signing a one year extension at his parent club, has come to Brunton Park for an initial six month loan deal, as our friends at Vital Brentford inform us:

Jack Bonham has signed a contract extension but the Brentford goalkeeper will spent the first half of next season on loan at League Two side Carlisle.

As expected, Bonham's immediate future will be away from Griffin Park, a lack of first team opportunities at Brentford saw it made clear by boss Dean Smith last week he was seeking to send the keeper out on loan.

Bonham has now joined Carlisle on a half-season, six month, loan deal. But not before a new one year extension was signed, keeping him under contract to the Bees until the summer of 2019.

Smith told the Official Website: 'We all believe that Jack has great potential. But to fulfil this potential he needs to play matches. Carlisle will give him a wonderful chance to do this.'

Arriving at Brentford in 2013, which came a few days after he made his Watford debut, that after a previous trial, Bonham, a regular in the matchday squads, has so far managed seven first team appearances for the Bees.

The signing of Luke Daniels on a free transfer from Scunthorpe would have pushed Bonham out of the first team picture, Daniels and last season's number one Dan Bentley will now battle for the gloves at Brentford.

Limited in his first team experience, but clearly rated at Brentford, this addition of Bonham should allow Carlisle to maintain a strong presence in goal as the Blues look to push on for promotion next season, having fallen just short in the play-offs last time round.
